Olivier Giroud struck late in the second half to earn Arsenal a 1-1 draw with Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

Ever since Arsenal's 3-1 home defeat to Manchester United, last Saturday, Alan Shearer has been inundated with messages from hysterical Gunners fans who were apoplectic for the former Newcastle United captain's analysis of their loss to Jose Mourinho's men.

We'll have to wait and see how serious the injury is but Ramsey's absence will open the door for Jack Wilshere to force his way back in to Wenger's first team plans.

And after saying his club "paid a heavy price for a slow start", Wenger turned his attention to Southampton's tactics. "Because if you take him on you have another guy who is good who will not play, it is as simple as that".

Southampton v Arsenal preview: Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino to keep strikers guessing

In an attempt to hold on to their narrow 1-0 lead, being camped in their half for the majority of the second half, the Saints began taking their time with goal kicks and throw-ins. It is as simple as that."He will start games because we play every three days". Overall, I think the spirit was great.

But the Gunners will feel it was two points dropped in their pursuit of a top-four spot. "And secondly, the authority of the referees to act early in the game, because it becomes really a problem in the last two seasons".

It was Giroud's 17th goal as a substitute for Arsenal, with the 30-year-old not starting one league match this season.

"If I'm on the bench in a Premier League game, I'm thinking, 'What can I do coming off the bench?' He is mentally extremely strong as well", Wenger said.
