National concealed carry reciprocity, NICS improvement bill passes House

On Dec. 6 Breitbart News reported that Rep. Richard Hudson's (R-NC) national reciprocity legislation passed the House and was headed to the Senate.

"This legislation will ensure that what happened to Shaneen does not happen to any other law-abiding gun owners by requiring states to recognize each other's gun carry permits, while recognizing states' rights to create their own firearms laws", MacArthur said in a statement.

Two things need to be noted here.

Beyond being a basic constitutional right, states that do not allow non-residents to carry concealed weapons leave these citizens in danger and with no real option for self-defense in instances of gun violence.

Through the now existing system, states are free to issue their own concealed carry permits and choose which other state's permits they want to recognize.

The bill faces strong opposition from Democrats as it moves into the Senate, but if it passes, it would essentially accomplish the main goals of the Small Business and Transportation Coalition's "Mike's Law".

The "Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act" was passed yesterday by a 231-198 margin. "Any measures that would contribute to the increase of firearms in NY could only jeopardize the level of safety that New Yorkers have benefited from through effective gun control".

The argument from 50-state-carry proponents that driver's licenses are valid in all 50 states once issued by each one misses the mark.

It also addresses the modern issue of mass shootings by giving state and government agencies incentive to update the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) with the most current information.

"Republicans are inviting violent criminals, domestic abusers, convicted stalkers, and those who have never undergone a background check or received any gun safety training the green light to carry their concealed weapons wherever they want", she added.

"Just days after the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, the NRA is engaging their allies in Congress to push through a risky national concealed carry reciprocity law, which begs the question: how low can you go?" That's why I have a concealed carry permit and why tens of millions of Americans do too. Instead, we have the highest rate of gun deaths.
