Delhi UT reported the highest crime rate (160.4) compared to the national average rate of 55.2. In the crimes against children, 145 cases were of kidnapping or abduction, 46 were of compelling girls for marriage. Bengaluru topped the list for cyber crimes for the last two years.

There was a 3% decline in the total number of "crime against women" in 2015 when compared to 2014. With 4,189 cases in 2016, the state ranked third in cases of rape with MP recording the most number of rape cases registered, followed by UP.

Delhi reported the highest crime rate under the IPC crimes followed by Kerala and Madhya Pradesh, the report said, adding a total of 37,37,870 persons were arrested, 32,71,262 chargesheeted, 7,94,616 convicted and 11,48,824 were acquitted in 2016.

Crimes against children and elderly have increased.

The national capital is followed by Mumbai, which recorded 12.3 per cent or 5,128 criminal cases against women.

Madhya Pradesh comes out top with 20.6% of the total number of cases in 2016 followed by Maharashtra - 18.4%.

The city police also registered 979 cases under the POCSOA, the second highest in metropolitan cities, the NCRB report said. However, 159 more rape cases were also registered in the rural areas of Delhi, taking the total number of rape cases in the entire national capital territory to 2,155.

The city reported the highest number of murders - 479 out of 2,194 cases (21.8 percent) followed by Bengaluru 10.4 percent (229 cases) and Patna 8.9 percent (195 cases).

A total of 1,11,569 children (41,175 males and 70,394 females) were reported missing in which maximum children missing were reported from West Bengal (15.1%) during 2016.

The state registered 2,299 cases of murder, which was the third highest, and 4,189 cases of rape, also the third highest. For other offences, such as traffic challans, NCRB will provide separate data from next year.

Delhi topped the list with 7,392 cases, followed by Mumbai and then Bengaluru.

The NCRB report on crimes for the year 2016 has placed Mumbai first in offences against senior citizens and second, next to Delhi, in crimes against women as well as children.

Atrocities/crime against Scheduled Castes have increased by 5.5 per cent in 2016 (40,801) over 2015 (38,670), while atrocities/crime against Scheduled Tribes have increased by 4.7 per cent in 2016 (6,568) over 2015 (6,276). "Majority of cases under crimes against women were reported under "Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives" (32.6%) followed by "Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty" (25.0%), "Kidnaping & Abduction of Women" (19.0%) and "Rape" (11.5%)".
