"The tragic death of Trooper Damon Allen is a sad and sobering reminder of the risks our men and women in uniform take every day", said Governor Abbott.
Funeral arrangements have been made and released to the public for the Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper who was killed in the line of duty on Thanksgiving Day. He was returning to a patrol vehicle when a suspect fired shots with a rifle.
Authorities say the gunman is Darbrett Black. He was charged with assault on a public servant, and attempting to take a weapon from an officer in 2015.
Black was booked into Brazos County Jail and charged with capital murder of a peace officer.
"Prayers for the family and loved ones of the Trooper killed on duty today and for all our Troopers who are serving our state and seeking justice for the killer", Cruz posted.
Allen was a father and a husband.

Words of condolences and signs of support are pouring out from law enforcement agencies, and Gov. Gregg Abbott.
A family friend started an online fundraiser that had raised more than $2,000 Friday afternoon, and the nonprofit 100 Club pledged $20,000 to Allen's wife and children.
Before he became a state trooper in 2002, Bell said, Allen worked as a correctional officer at the Boyd prison unit outside Fairfield.
"His number one priority was the safety of the people he protected".
Allen was stationed at Groesbeck at the time of his death.
His family did not respond to calls for comment Friday. "And you just pray that it never, ever happens - but it does, and you know that's reality".При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
