Sonia, Rahul condole demise of PR Dasmunsi

Veteran Congress leader and a former union minister of information and broadcasting, Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi passed away at 72. He was critically ill for the past one month and unfortunately succumbed to his illness.

He is survived by his wife Deepa Dasmunsi and son Priyadeep Dasmunsi who were at his bedside at the time of his passing, it said.

Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi was left paralysed and became unable to speak after the stroke in 2008.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi also condoled the death of the veteran politician.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bnaerjee has conveyed her condolence over the death of the Congress leader.

Dasmunsi also served as the President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for nearly 20 years.

"I just received the news of sad demise of former Union Minister, former West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee President and our beloved leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi", Chowdhury said in a letter. Later he was shifted to home, and in 2009 he was admitted to Apollo Hospital here.

Dasmunsi represented the Raiganj (Lok Sabha constituency) in West Bengal, which was later represented by his Deepa. She said Dasmunsi served the party and government "illustriously".

He was the president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) till his untimely stroke in 2008, following which Praful Patel took over as the president of the Indian football governing body.

Sonia expressed solidarity with the leader's family, particularly his wife Deepa Dasmunsi, and supporters.

He had been in a marathon coma after suffering a massive stroke and paralysis in October 2008.

He was the cabinet minister in Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting during the first term of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Otherwise he could have done more in his political life.

"His death brings an end to an era of data-based and logic-based debates, " added, Salim, the present MP from Raiganj.
