Guru Nanak Jayanti 2017: Significance of the sacred day of Gurpurab

The Governor has prayed for the development of the state beside happiness and prosperity of the people of the state on Guru Nanak Jayanti. Guru Nanak enlightened the entire world with his deep and philosophical religious teachings; this is the reason this day is also celebrated as "Prakash Utsav".

Over 2,600 Sikh pilgrims arrived at the Wagah Railway Station here on Thursday from India to take part in the religious and cultural rituals to mark the 549th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal at the closing ceremony to mark the 548th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak in Guwahati on Saturday. Guru Nanak was the first of the ten Sikh gurus and he laid the foundation of Sikhism.

According to the lunar calendar, Guru Nanak's birthday is celebrated on full moon day of Kartik month or Kartik Poornima. In 2017, Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on November 4.

The main function was held at Gurdwara Yadgar Guru Nanak Devji (Near Bibi Chand Kaur Samadh) at Chand Nagar Gumat, where devotees paid obeisance and offered prayers.

The day begins with the singing of morning hymns and is followed by Katha and Kirtan, which is recital of scriptures and hymns in the praise of the Guru. "Although Guru Nanak Dev's Gurpurab is a day to celebrate and enjoy, we must introspect and ask ourselves that how much of Guru Nanak's principles and teachings we have adopted in our lives", he said.
