Boy, 10, takes family vehicle, leads police on a high-speed chase

She chased her son, who drove about 96 miles per hour, on I-90 through Cuyahoga, Lake and Erie counties, police and state troopers said. Police said the boy drove west on Interstate 90, fled from Westlake officers and got onto the Ohio Turnpike.

Authorities said a little boy took them on a high-speed chase after reportedly stealing the auto of his mother's boyfriend, that lasted around 45 miles.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol took over the chase once the boy entered the Ohio Turnpike.

The boy then starting driving on Interstate 80, where a trooper motioned for the boy to stop as he pulled alongside him.

Reeder said that troopers tried to stop the boy by putting stop sticks on the highway to disable the vehicle. He tried to avoid the spikes by serving into a grassy area, where an officer struck the auto at a relatively slow speed with his vehicle while another officer used his cruiser to block the boy from returning to the road.

"It was very lucky no one was hurt", Sgt. Tim Hoffman of the highway patrol told the Post.

After detaining the boy, his mother informed police this was the second time in two weeks he had taken a family member's auto. As he was taken into custody, he tried to spit in several officers faces and even kick one in the chin, WEWS reports.

On Thursday he was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Police will consult with county prosecutors about possible charges. In that case, officers found the boy driving in the fast lane on I-90 with three flat tires, according to the report.

"He's a good driver", the tow operator told News 5.
