She said she knows she can handle taking dogs from other regions because she recently began pulling dogs from kill shelters in Chicago.

"The more people do that, the more likely it is that animals will be euthanized - and that's what we're trying to avoid", Staton said. Pet lovers in the rest of the country who want to help are encouraged to visit or to adopt a pet from their local shelter to make room for homeless pets being moved out of the hurricane-affected areas.

For those who abandon their animals, such as chaining up their dog in a backyard without food or water, they will be issued two citations - animal cruelty and abandonment.
