Police say officer Gary Michael, 37, stopped Mr McCarthy's vehicle for a registration violation late Sunday night.

Police have searched McCarthy's home and the surrounding area, Lowe said.

A manhunt is underway after a rookie police officer was shot and killed at a traffic stop in Clinton, Missouri, police said. Lowe says the driver got out of the vehicle and shot at Michael, who was able to return fire.

Left, 39-year-old suspect Ian McCarthy. "He was there protecting and serving, and that's what we are called to do, and he did it, and he did with heroic fashion", Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said.

The vehicle stopped was registered to Ian McCarthy, 39, of Clinton and he is considered a person of interest in the killing, Lowe said.

Sprint is popping after its first positive earnings report in three years
Some customers may be wary of Sprint since it's unclear it'll be around in its current form. Whether Sprint can negotiate a good deal in extended discussions remains to be seen.

Court records indicate McCarthy pleaded guilty in November 2013 in Missouri to a misdemeanor driving without a valid license.

In addition to the disorderly conduct conviction, McCarthy had an extensive criminal background in New Hampshire. In July 2015, he was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

No gun was recovered from either the scene of the shooting or the crash, which leads the police to assume that the suspect is armed, according to Lowe.

Clinton is located about 75 miles southeast of Kansas City. He was a Clinton resident and had been with the department for less than a year. According to Fox News, authorities believe he is still near the Clinton area. "The time signature for this footage is consistent with Officer Michael's murder".
