Ravens' David Olson signing is not biggest deterrent to Colin Kaepernick deal

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh does not believe quarterback Joe Flacco is in any danger of missing the start of the new National Football League season with a back injury, but indicated Colin Kaepernick could be brought in with his starter at least temporarily on the sideline.

On Friday, the Ravens announced they had signed quarterback David Olson.

Coach John Harbaugh said it might be a week, and Flacco agreed after his teammates walked off the field Friday.

With Joe Flacco now sidelined with a back injury, the Ravens were looking for some help at the position, opening the door for Olson who saw limited snaps at Stanford and Clemson.

"It all depends on a lot of things", Harbaugh told reporters.

Colin Kaepernick has yet to find a new team.

There is a degree of logic here, of course, as Kaepernick played under Harbaugh's brother, Jim Harbaugh. Now his football career has taken a dramatic turn with his signing with the Ravens.

Hot and humid start to the weekend with more rain chances ahead
Temperatures are to drop into the lower 80s as the week wears on with only a slight chance of precipitation. High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s for next week, with rain chances for Monday and Friday .

"It's so early on in camp that it's kind of useless to push through and maybe hurt yourself more".

"We haven't worked him out, but from what he tells me he's in great shape", Harbaugh said. He most recently played with the Kansas City Phantoms last season. Kaepernick has produced at a high level in this league and there's evidence to suggest he could actually be a solid starter still at this point. Kaepernick's offensive coordinator with the 49ers was Greg Roman, who is now an assistant with the Ravens.

If Flacco's absence becomes extended, that increases the chances of Baltimore signing Kaepernick.

But signing Kaepernick would've immediately meant a quarterback competition in training camp. Olson throwing to receivers who hope to make the roster, a temporary job, doesn't change that.

"We'll just see where it goes", Harbaugh said Thursday.

Kaepernick wasn't fantastic a year ago, but he put up solid numbers on a bad 49ers team. We are dealing with a very temporary situation with Flacco that could last as little as a week, but which should be comfortably resolved before the start of the season. If the back injury was a major concern, the Ravens would be out signing a more experienced quarterback.
