Detroit Native Among 16 Killed in Military Plane Crash in Mississippi

At least 16 people were killed on Monday after a military plane crashed into a soybean field in Mississippi's Delta region, authorities said.

Just one day a U.S. Marine Corps KC-130T crashed into a MS field, a man stopped on the side of the highway to and played "Taps" to honor the 16 service members killed, FOX13 reports.

The Marine Corps said the cause was under investigation and offered no information on whether the plane issued a distress call.

The KC-130T is one of the older variants of the aircraft in use with the Marine Corps. He said there are two large impact areas of the crash site: the first one is about a half a mile north of Highway 82 and the second is about a half a mile south of Highway 82.

The names and hometowns of the victims have not been released pending notification of family.

The KC-130 Hercules, manufactured by Lockheed Martin Corp, conducts air-to-air refueling, carries cargo and performs tactical passenger missions.

The refueling aircraft crashed Monday afternoon in a soybean field in rural MS, killing at least 16 people aboard.

No official details are immediately available on the circumstances of the crash, which happened in northern Mississippi's LeFlore County, about 160 kilometres north of Jackson, the state capital, on Monday evening.

Investigators told ABC's MS affiliate WLOX-TV that debris was found on both sides of the highway, which they said could indicate that the plane may have exploded mid-air.
