If Konta notched up a record, becoming the first British woman to reach a Wimbledon singles semifinal since Virginia Wade in 1978, Halep missed an achievement - winning the match would have made her World No. 1.

The pair have faced off four times in their careers, with honours now even in the head to head record - and Konta was reluctant to play up her chances of reaching a first Wimbledon quarter-final, despite her apparent good form.

Romanian Halep would have become world number one had she beaten the Briton but went down 6-7 (2) 7-6 (5) 6-4. I think I was very prepared for her to really, really challenge me and make it very hard for me, which she did.

The refined surroundings of the main showcourt were a world away from the tiny stadium on the Black Sea where the two players last met, Halep winning that encounter in straight sets. The big-hitter Azarenka dictated the match in the first half of the opening set, but her 12th unforced error gave Halep the break back and changed the scenario.

"Karolina is an exemplary athlete on and off the court and she truly deserves this fantastic moment in her career", WTA CEO and chairman Steve Simon said in a statement. It was absolutely a stunning performance really and the pressure was relentless that Konta kept applying - it was brilliant, she never really wavered one little bit. The 26-year-old maintained she was not playing against a crowd (indeed, it will be on her side this time around) or a past experience, but another tennis player - and a top one at that.

In the opening seven days of play at this year's competition, 14 matches on Centre Court have been from the men's singles draw, with just eight coming from the women's.

Against ABC/CBS/NBC, the difference was even higher at 11 percent in favor of the three broadcast networks, Axios reported . Independents also sided with the Democrats overall, with CNN coming out 15 points ahead among those surveyed.

Asked if the spat would hang over their upcoming match, Konta said: "I'm playing against another tennis player, another opponent".

Garcia herself admitted that she "did not know" where the difference between the two was afterwards. "She's very much in form and playing very, very well, she'll definitely challenge me".

"It's fine to be the last British women's victor (at).Wimbledon, but it's better to have plenty of British players to win", Wade said in comments released by the All England Club.

Boy, am I looking forward to Venus Williams taking on Jelena Ostapenko in the quarter-finals. "I've dreamed of it ever since I was a little girl, to be a grand slam champion". On Monday, he faces the unseeded Benoit Paire, and a semi-final berth at least looks like a distinct possibility.

"She's a very good player".

The pre-match cake before her quarterfinal against Halep would likely be a chocolate chip and banana muffin, she revealed.
