He affirmed that he has always tried to do a lot for the farmers. "But I am here to hold discussions with all of you".

"Several important issues including seventh pay scale for employees are pending with the government".

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan alleged that the farmers had been incited by Congressmen who have been supporting the farmers' agitation. Gandhi travelled by air, by auto, by motorcyle and by foot from Delhi to Neemuch district of Madhya Pradesh via Rajasthan before he was detained and arrested in Naya Gaon, about 70 km from Mandsaur.

Sangh state president Dev Narayan Patel after meeting Chouhan said, "We asked him to waive the loans of the farmers and pressed for the minimum support price (MSP) for farm produce".

Earlier in the day, while addressing the gathering, he said, "I know of the bumper crop production that has sent the prices crashing down in the state".

"Shivraj Singh Chouhan's fast is a drama. It is a sham, he should answer why a case of murder has not been filed in the death of five farmers in Madhya Pradesh", party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala told reporters here.

"A protest is valid (only) when the government doesn't listen".

Asserting that the Chief Minister would take decision in the interest of farmers, another farmer said that they haven't seen any chief minister making so much effort for them. "Two days back, a farmer in Raisen told his daughter not to serve food as he consumed poisonous substance". Calling the chief minister's fast a "tamasha", Yechury took to Twitter and wrote, "Hypocrisy at its worst: On the one hand, unleash police to kill poor farmers, and on the other, tamasha of a "fast".

The Congress on Friday accused the government of working for the rich but neglecting the poor and said the country's farmers are in the "throes of a serious crisis but Prime Minister Narendra Modi is paying no attention to their plight".

Meanwhile, police apprehended 48 Congress workers including seven women when they were marching towards BHEL Dussehra Maidan where the CM is sitting on a fast. "So the state can not move ahead without the farmers".

"We requested the Chief Minister to call off his hunger strike".

He also described that the families of the deceased farmers who died in the clashes in Mandsaur met him, "One thing that made me emotional was the number of our children that we lost in these protests". While the farmers in the State as in Maharashtra have been facing hardships, there is no denying that timely action would have helped defuse the agitation.

The police, faced with what they say is a veritable barrage of fake news, rumours and unconfirmed reports, have suspended internet services in five districts - Mandsaur, Ujjain, Ratlam, Neemuch and Dhar.
