Now is the time for Rooney to leave Manchester United

The Manchester United and England captain has struggled for first-team games under Jose Mourinho this season, although he has been handed slightly more minutes in recent games.

Rooney, who left his boyhood club for Manchester United in 2004, is expected to exit Old Trafford in the summer.

Gomes took to social media after the game to thank supporters for such a warm reception, noting that playing at Old Trafford was a "dream come true". Jose Mourinho has allowed him only 14 starts in the league this term, while previous year Louis Van Gaal even attempted to move him into midfield to bring his game back to life.

And Neville does not expect Rooney to start in that final against Ajax on Wednesday night, even going as far as to say the 31-year-old should look to move on in the summer.

Rooney joined the Everton academy aged nine before making his professional debut for the club in 2002 at just nine years old.

Rooney has a contract until June 2019, but Everton are interested in bringing the forward back to Goodison Park and Neville believes his time at United is up.

"You hope (he doesn't leave) but the way the season's gone, particularly since Christmas, he's not been involved as much as he'd probably have liked", Neville told Sky Sports. I don't know if he wants to come back to Everton.

Wenger will be happy not to see Rooney on his opponent's team sheet, given Wayne has notched up 14 goals and seven assists against his side, but he can foresee a return for the Man United striker in the future.

"At the moment, maybe he has a decision to make".
