Hassan Rouhani wins second term as Iranian president

Final results announced by Iran's interior ministry Saturday showed President Hassan Rouhani leading far ahead of his conservative rival with 57% of the votes, or almost 23 million votes out of more than 40 million votes cast on Friday's general elections.

At the start of the Trump Administration in January and February, US relations with Iran worsened after the Islamic Republic carried out ballistic missiles tests, and new US sanctions against Iran were announced.

Using more measured tones, Rouhani said Tehran was waiting before passing any judgment on the new government in Washington.

Tillerson, who is accompanying U.S. President Donald Trump on his first visit overseas to Saudi Arabia, said that deals worth $350 billion have been signed between U.S. companies and Saudi Arabia during the president's first day in Riyadh.

The Iranian president added that "the issue of terrorism can not be solved through giving money to superpowers".

Hassan Rouhani won the Iranian presidential election in an unexpected landslide on Saturday, a win for reformists in the country.

His election has also been welcomed by Iranian expats overseas as well as the worldwide community.

Heshmat Alavi, a human rights activist, wrote an op-ed for Al Arabiya, in which he assessed that following Rouhani's're-election', the most important issue was ending Iran's destructive influence on the Middle East. "They should be picked by the people".
