The tragedy occurred as a crowd assembled on the decades-old bridge on the Sanvordem river in Curchorem village, 45 km from here, to watch an unidentified person attempt suicide. Some say it is 40-50 (persons) who were on the bridge, some say it around 30. So far, the bodies of two people who’re dead were pulled from the river.
Some who fell had managed to swim to safety but Pednekar said he was unable to confirm local media reports that up to 30 people were still missing, adding that "search operations are ongoing".
"People who were keen on witnessing the rescue operation for a youth who had jumped into the river to commit suicide removed the barricades on the bridge", he said. The fire and emergency services have begun the search operation.
"The people, who were watching the rescue operation, were not only from the local village but numerous commuters had stopped to see what is happening", he said.
