Trump NSA says status of Western Wall a 'policy decision'

US President Donald Trump (R) shakes hands with King Abdullah II of Jordan in the Oval Office at the White House as First Lady Melania Trump and Queen Rania look on in Washington, DC, on April 5, 2017.

McMaster offered details of the US President's itinerary for his upcoming visit to Israel and the West Bank.

Israel captured the Old City and east Jerusalem in 1967 and later annexed it to the rest of the city - a move the global community does not recognize.

While out scouting the site with U.S. representatives, the Israeli team requested that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accompany Trump and his family to the wall.

A senior Israeli official in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed to ABC News that Israel has asked the United States to clarify its position on the Western Wall after a "senior member of the US delegation" prepping for Trump's upcoming visit told his Israeli counterparts that the Western Wall is "not your territory".

David Rubin, the former mayor of the Israeli city of Shiloh, believes President Trump going to the Western Wall without Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is clearly an attempt not to acknowledge Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem.

The rival claims to Jerusalem lie at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and no countries now have their embassies in occupied Jerusalem, instead basing them in Israel's commercial capital Tel Aviv.

In a matter of days Trump is expected in Israel for an official visit.

The White House distanced itself from the alleged comments, saying in statements to US media that they did not reflect the views of the administration.

In the same interview, Haley also drew a contrast with other administration officials by saying Israel's capital city "should be Jerusalem" and that "the [US] embassy should be moved to Jerusalem" from Tel Aviv. Earlier in the day, National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster wouldn't specifically clarify this.

"The Western Wall is obviously one of the holiest sites in the Jewish faith".

Rivlin called on the "whole world to recognise Jerusalem as the official capital of the state of Israel".

"We don't think it would be wise to do it at this time", the official said. "His love for and commitment to the State of Israel is rock-solid and it enjoys his highest priority", he added. The relocation is strongly opposed by many USA allies as Palestinians also claim the city as their capital. This comes amid a report that an administration official told Israeli officials that the Western Wall is in disputed territory.

"We will get it done", Trump said, flaunting what he has described as his deal-making prowess. He further asked the president to "begin to fulfill his campaign pledge" to move the us embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

He said that Trump wants to see Israelis and Palestinians "sitting together without preconditions and talking, with the hope that this will lead to peace".

Trump has two weeks to make that decision, before the embassy automatically moves based on a 1995 U.S. law mandating the location switch.
