USA officials warn Trump against moving U.S. embassy to Jerusalem

He has told Trump that Palestinians are intractable negotiating partners who make demands that Israel can not meet.

Trump is planning on visiting the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City, the holiest Jewish prayer site.

After a Fox News reporter said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Trump against the embassy move, the Israeli Prime Minister's office called those claims false and pointed to readouts of Netanyahu's White House visit February 17 that said Netanyahu supported the move. Instead of moving the embassy to Israel's capital of Jerusalem (almost every overseas American embassy is in the host country's capital), Tillerson floated the potential move as a bargaining chip as part of a peace deal with the Palestinians.

Trump's decision is being closely watched as the president prepares to depart Friday on his first foreign trip.

Trump's administration has been sending mixed messages in its dealings with a right-wing Israeli government that had hoped for a more sympathetic attitude from the Republican president after a rocky relationship with his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama.

An Israeli official told Channel 2 that the Jewish state was "convinced that this statement contradicts President Trump's policy as expressed in his fierce opposition to the latest [United Nations] Security Council resolution" and that it had asked the United States for clarification on the comment.

A source within the Palestine Liberation Organization tells Newsweek, under condition of anonymity, that President Trump will meet President Abbas in Bethlehem on May 23.

"Now, it is clear to everyone that solution of the Palestine issue, ending the (Israeli) occupation will greatly help in countering terrorism in the region", the Palestinian President said. "I prayed for the president and wished him success, and I said the blessing one says when reaching a new milestone".

Israeli police said that a Palestinian man was shot dead after he stabbed and moderately injured a police officer in East Jerusalem's Old City on Saturday. Earlier this month, he held a warm meeting with the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, at the White House.

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Israel in July, Abbas said India should continue to play the important role that it has been playing to bring peace in the Middle East. He said Israel must oppose attempts to establish a Palestinian state and insist on Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem "forever".
