All of these coaches have won at least one Super Bowl in charge of the Steelers and have continued to keep the Steelers as a perennial playoff team.

Rooney was named the 33rd Ambassador to Ireland in 2009 by President Barack Obama and served in that capacity until 2012.

In 2000, Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney joined his late father, Art Rooney, as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Steelers players, reacting on social media to Rooney's death, similarly mentioned Rooney's humility.

He eventually took over day-to-day operations for the franchise in 1975, holding onto them - first with his father, then on his own - for almost three decades until he passed them on to his own son, Art Jr., in 2003.

"There's no question about it, Dan was really a lovely reflection of his dad", he said.

Rooney had a vibrant life outside football.

The news of the passing of Dan Rooney rose many reactions both inside and outside of football. "And our commitment is we have something called the Rooney Rule, which requires us to make sure when we have an opening, that on the team or the league level, that we are going to interview a diverse slate of candidates".

In said statement, the Chargers emphasized the sheer magnitude of Rooney's positive impact on the Steelers, the city of Pittsburgh and the league itself.

Rooney's funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 St. Paul Cathedral, at 108 N. Dithridge Pittsburgh. He embodied professionalism and was a man who created a family-like atmosphere that will continue on. Rooney is a graduate of Duquesne. He was chairman of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the architect of those championship teams.

Perhaps chief among the former Steelers owner's contributions was his advocacy for minorities in regards to executive and coaching positions.

"After every game, win or lose, Mr. Rooney would enter our locker room, look me in my eye and shake my hand along with every player who stepped foot on the field. Our hearts along with our thoughts and prayers go out to the Rooney family and the entire Steelers organization". On April 13, 2017, the pair was reunited in a much more significant place. He said Rooney's values were based in "America, Ireland and his church".

"Dan was my mentor, role model, indispensable supporter and great friend during five decades". He was at home on mean streets, in locker rooms and chapels, with presidents, popes, poets and visionaries.
