Areas near Texas and their current gas price climate: Midland Odessa- $2.32/g, up 4.5 cents per gallon from last week's $2.27/g. "Oil now stands $5 per barrel higher than just a few weeks ago and is the main culprit for rising gasoline prices".

According to AAA, today's national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $2.39.

Diesel prices are also expected to rise to $2.70 a gallon this year from $2.34 a gallon, but that's also well below the average price of the fuel over the last five years.

"This is the type of volatility we've come to expect this time of year", AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said.

Gasoline demand is 0.23 percent higher than this time a year ago, AAA said, while gasoline inventories declined almost 8 percent compared with the week before.

Beyond the summer blend switch-over, ongoing tensions in the Middle East have fueled a rise in crude oil prices, according to AAA.

With oil prices making additional gains Monday morning, the future of gasoline prices looks to deliver higher gasoline prices in a majority of the country again this week, and overall, the national average gasoline price may remain in an upward direction for most of the next month. "Whether gas prices reach that peak ($2.70 a gallon) will depend" on a number of forces at work in the oil market". Its April 7 average of $2.733 is down six-tenths of a cent over the week, the AAA says. The good news, however, is that the lowest price has been reported at more than one location. About 80 miles to the south, Stuart's average was three cents higher. Oil prices hit a one-month high on Friday after the United States fired missiles at a Syrian government airbase, sending shockwaves through global markets and raising concerns that the conflict could spread in the oil-rich region. Crude oil futures rallied following last week's USA missile strike against a Syrian air base amid concerns that further unrest could lead to oil supply disruptions. The bulk of these stations are in the states with the lowest overall gas price averages: SC, $2.03, Oklahoma, $2.07, Tennessee $2.07, Mississippi, $2.08 and Alabama $2.09. Declining inventories can signal rising gas prices.

AAA said the crude oil market has largely recovered after spending almost three weeks under $50 per barrel.
