Trump hails progress in China relationship

Chinese President Xi Jinping (R) waves to the press as he walks with US President Donald Trump at the Mar-a-Lago estate in West Palm Beach, Florida, April 7, 2017.

Trump declared his relationship with Xi as "outstanding" at the end of a high-stakes but studiously familiar first meeting between the pair at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

Some allies renewed their calls for a leadership change in Damascus, although officials in the Trump administration did not portray the strikes as the start of a broader campaign.

Both Xi and Trump brought their top officials to the meeting.

The U.S. -China summit was the first of several opportunities for Mr. Trump to demonstrate statesmanship by advancing the national interest in resetting U.S. trade and investment relationships with China.

Some within USA industry had suggested those earlier talks yielded little substance, and urged the Trump administration to scrap them until Beijing displayed more initiative to address complaints about its industrial policies.

Trump's grandchildren, Arabella and her brother Joseph were seen singing a Chinese folk song "Jasmine" and reciting verses from the "Three-Character Classics" as well as Tang dynasty poems to the two presidents in the video, while Melania Trump, Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner and the others listened to the children's performance.

The mood at the summit was upbeat.

"But I can see that, I think long-term, we are going to have a very, very great relationship and I look very much forward to it".

"It signals to Pyongyang that the United States has a new sheriff in town who isn't hesitant about pulling his gun from the holster", Kim said.

Mr. Trump should insist that the time has come for a major currency realignment that would substantially increase the trade-weighted exchange rates of all the major surplus countries including China, Japan, Korea and the European Union.

The Secretary of State, the former CEO of Exxon Mobil, an energy firm, also signalled impatience with those calling for America to maintain a separate, specific high-level dialogue around human rights.

China and the United States also talked about establishing a "new high-level framework" for cooperation on security questions which looks remarkably similar to what Mr Xi launched with then President Barack Obama two years ago.

Senate backs budget with spending cuts
The budget bill as passed included $90 million in cuts and about $90 million from the Rainy Day Fund. Justice said the basis of the right to work legislation was being adjudicated in Kanawha County.

In remarks to reporters, Tillerson confirmed that the U.S. and China have officially adopted this framework as the new high-level bilateral dialogue platform. No new deals or concrete proposals were unveiled at the meeting, however.

"I think a first step could be getting North Korea to freeze all of its activities - no more nuclear testing, no more missile testing, get inspectors in to verify things", Blinken said.

Tillerson said Trump and Xi noted the urgency of the threat of North Korea's weapons program and that they reaffirmed their commitment to a denuclearization of the divided Korean Peninsula. -China cooperation on non-proliferation.

Meanwhile, the US and China agreed on efforts to resolve North Korea's nuclear issue, but they did not go so far as to issue a joint statement in an indication that there was no major breakthrough over the matter.

Trump accepted Xi's invitation to visit China this year, but no date has been set, Tillerson said. In May 2016, in an interview with The Economist, the businessman declared: "We have a lot of power over China economically".

"President Trump noted the importance of adhering to global rules and norms in the East and South China Seas and to previous statements on non-militarisation".

One other phrase was notable for its absence.

"We had a long discussion already". The Obama administration had pointedly refused to embrace that formula, but Tillerson caused a stir when he quoted Chinese rhetoric echoing the framework during his visit to Beijing.

For China, the meeting was probably a success. Instead, Xi emphasized the importance of a "new starting point" for the relationship.

And proud granddad, President Donald Trump, retweeted about the performance, a day after ordering a missile attack on Syria.

In comments to the media after the meeting, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that Trump indicated to Xi that "we would be happy to work with them [China]" but that Washington was "prepared to chart our own course if this is something China is just unable to co-ordinate with us".

Russian Federation and Iran, who back the Syrian government, have responded angrily to the strikes, while allies who criticised President Barack Obama's cautious approach have welcomed the change. Last year, two-way trade reached United States dollars 519.6 billion, compared to USD 2.5 billion in 1979 when the two nations established diplomatic ties.
