A late missed penalty from Harry Arter cost Bournemouth victory as they drew 0-0 at Southampton.

Arter's match-winning chance came with 13 minutes of the south coast clash to go, with the Republic of Ireland midfielder stepping up to take a spot-kick after Ryan Bertrand had pulled back Ryan Foster. I didn't intentionally miss.

Southampton boss Claude Puel tells BBC Sport: "When you play the first game after the worldwide break it is always hard. As much as it is disappointing it is part and parcel of football", Arter told BBC Sport.

Shane Long would be the obvious choice to replace Gabbiadini up top, while Jay Rodriguez is also a possibility, although the duo have only scored seven Premier League goals between them this season.

"Jack will be the one who decides his future, in conjunction with Arsenal", he said.

"I think Gabbiadni can not play this game", he said. It is not an excuse.

"We had a few really good games when Southampton dropped to League One. although we did not always get the result we wanted".

"We had good intensity at the beginning".

Bournemouth travel to local rivals Southampton for the 5.30pm kick-off on Saturday evening.

Wilshere came on with 20 minutes remaining at St Mary's in the No 10 role and completely turned in their favour a game Bournemouth had been utterly dominated in by their opponents.

The Cherries are the first side since Crystal Palace in October 2016 to miss three penalties in a row in the Premier League.

Southampton's Dusan Tadic had complained this week about the frequency with which Claude Puel substitutes him and his manager responded by telling him to do his talking on the pitch.

His omission from Gareth Southgate's most recent England squad, even when the national team were short of quality central midfielders, spoke volumes about his diminishing reputation that he forged as a 16-year-old breaking into Arsenal's first team and has seen shattered by several long-term injuries.

Bournemouth has never won at Southampton in 13 league and cup games (8L, 5D), and avoided a fourth straight defeat at St Mary's.
