A person with knowledge of the decision says Romo is retiring rather than trying to chase a Super Bowl with another team after losing his starting job with the Dallas Cowboys.

"But even though the former Cowboys quarterback will assume Simms' position on CBS lead National Football League broadcast team alongside Jim Nantz, Simms was "absolutely not" fired", his longtime representative told The Record, and his future role with the network has not yet been decided.

"As an organization, we did what he asked us to do in terms of his release, and we wanted to do what was ultimately in his best interest and in the best interest of his family", Jones said in a statement.

"It really had nothing to do with the Texans and everything to do with CBS", Tony Romo said.

Jones also lauded Romo for being a wonderful representative of the Cowboys organization for 14 years. They could have saved some nice cash against the cap by simply placing Romo on the retired list.

"There's no part of me that wants to play", Romo said.

He hasn't officially filed his retirement papers, and he may never do so now that Dallas has released him, which has us thinking: What if Romo did return to the field? At CBS, Romo's name has been bandied about as a possible replacement for Phil Simms, a frequent target of critics on gameday.

Somewhere around 2010 or 2011, I decided I might as well just play ball and I'll try and go win it at the end of the game. ROMO: I've got to go attack this just like football and see where I'm good and where I'm not... "I hope that I'm able to make the CBS family proud with their decision". You can tell him he got me early. You always leave yourself a little wiggle room, but I understand what it takes to play football. "I'm going from being the old guy to being the young guy".
