Tavares hurt his left hamstring in a 2-1 win against New Jersey on Friday, and coach Doug Weight says there's no expectation he can return before the Islanders close their season against Ottawa on April 9.

With leading scorer and captain John Tavares out for the foreseeable future, the Islanders open a four-game road trip Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres.

Crosby leads Penguins past Rangers in shootout NEW YORK - Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist in regulation and then got the clinching goal in the shootout to lift Pittsburgh to a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers on Friday night, snapping the Penguins' four-game skid. Just over four minutes later, Jake McCabe fumbled a puck behind Buffalo's net which poked out to Lee again, where he tallied the insurance marker. His goal 42 seconds into overtime lifted the Sabres to a 3-2 win over the Islanders on December 16 in western NY.

Early in the period, Anders Lee was able to score a power play goal.

The Islanders struggled to create scoring chances throughout the second and third periods and twice surrendered one-goal leads before Lee's goals.

Cal Clutterbuck and Joshua Ho-Sang also scored and Jaroslav Halak stopped 35 shots to improve to 3-1 since being recalled from the minors. Lee reached back for the loose puck and backhanded it in with 5:27 left.

Evander Kane, with his team-leading 27th goal, and Zemgus Girgensons scored for Buffalo in a game the Sabres never led. Smith could serve as another key cog on Buffalo's top-ranked power play, which is clicking on all cylinders by going 7-for-10 in the last five games - although it was just 1-for-5 in a pair of December battles versus NY. In the first period, the Devils had five penalties, but the Islanders were only to convert on one of them.

Ho-Sang, the Islanders' 2014 first-round pick, has 10 points in 15 games since making his National Hockey League debut on March 2.

It took 56 seconds after Buffalo tied the score on Kane's goal 10:08 into the second period for the Islanders to regain the lead.

He put the Islanders up 2-1 by scoring on a breakaway after teammate Dennis Seidenberg forced Buffalo's Jack Eichel to commit a turnover in the NY zone.

Connor Jones made his National Hockey League debut on Sunday afternoon, stepping into the Islanders lineup after being recalled from Bridgeport on Saturday. Sabres RW Kyle Okposo missed his second game due to illness and has already been ruled out from playing against Toronto on Monday.
