Meals on Wheels America said they've received more than $100,000 in donations since Thursday, but it's not because of a sudden increase in American philanthropy.

Trump's budget proposal would cut hundreds of millions of dollars for the Department of Health and Human Services, as well as eliminate Community Development Block Grants provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

A program that feeds many of our parents and grandparents may take another hit in funding. Are we, as a nation, going to discontinue funding a program that provides food and some companionship to senior citizens with limited mobility?

Some local branches of Meals on Wheels are also reporting increases in both financial donations and interest in volunteering.

One in six seniors "struggles with hunger", according to the organization, which provides its services free of charge for those who can not afford to pay.

Mulvaney defended the administration's budget from criticism that its cuts to social programs would be painful for millions of working-class voters in rural states like West Virginia, where voters went heavily for Trump in last fall's election. "We can't spend money on programs just because they sound good". Or simply volunteer your lunch hour with its Let's Do Lunch program, which asks volunteers to deliver a quick meal and visit with a senior nearby over their lunch break.

But the 5,000 local Meals on Wheels offices, which do the layman's work of providing the meals and services to seniors, receive a significant chunk of their money from funding that could be on the chopping block. One option is to add money to supplement Meals on Wheels funding.

"We know that this budget proposal is only the beginning and we have our work cut out for us in the coming months", Bertolette said.

"Oftentimes the drivers are the only ones the seniors come into contact with throughout the day", she says.

This is the department responsible with offering government support for a variety of programs, including Meals on Wheels.

The programs don't cost much, and cost even less to the federal government.

Meals on Wheels claimed on their website that it would be hard to imagine a scenario where the next federal budget would not have an impact on the services they provide.

Founded in 1971, Meals on Wheels Long Beach is one of a handful of programs of its kind that doesn't take federal money, Cruikshank said.

The Osceola Council on Aging Meals on Wheels program raised more than $20,000 at its annual March for Meals 5K Saturday. The organization also saw a whole lot of people offering up their time as well as their cash.

"It's not just a meal, but a wellness check", Noe said.
